SVU Live Webinar: LE Arterial Duplex Correlation with IVUS Understanding the Relationship -- 10/06/2026
SVU Live Webinar: LE Arterial Duplex Correlation with IVUS Understanding the Relationship
Webinar Overview
Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) has become an increasingly important tool in vascular diagnosis and intervention, yet its approach to stenosis assessment differs significantly from traditional extravascular ultrasound (EVUS). This webinar will explore the evolution of both modalities, review how EVUS diagnostic criteria were established and validated, and examine why stenosis grading with IVUS cannot be directly compared to EVUS or angiography. Through clinical examples and retrospective data analysis, attendees will gain a practical understanding of the relationship between velocity-based, diameter-based, and area-based measurements, while considering opportunities for future research and standardization.
Learning Objectives
1. Describe the fundamental principles, strengths, and limitations of extravascular ultrasound (EVUS), intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), and angiography in the assessment of vascular stenosis.
2. Explain how EVUS diagnostic criteria were developed and validated, including the relationship between Doppler velocity measurements and angiographic diameter reduction.
3. Differentiate between diameter-based stenosis grading and area-based stenosis grading and discuss why IVUS findings cannot be directly compared to EVUS or angiographic measurements on a 1:1 basis.
4. Apply the concepts of EVUS and IVUS stenosis assessment to clinical case examples and recognize scenarios where apparent discrepancies between modalities may occur.
5. Evaluate current challenges and future opportunities for standardizing stenosis grading as IVUS continues to play an expanding role in vascular diagnosis and intervention.
